This is What Patriotism Looks Like

Great news. It’s officially perfect weather in Michigan season! It’s chalk, porch swing, and sidewalk season. And it’s also prime door-knocking season!!

This is my favorite campaign activity to do with my kids. When we had our canvass launch (with about 50 people who showed up!) in Rochester Hills, we made goodie bags for all the kiddos to understand that they are junior volunteers and helping us fight for our country, too.

But I wanted to share some of my thoughts after going out with my oldest son, Trey, this past weekend. Trey really enjoys door knocking - he talked with folks about his favorite movies, about the Pistons, and many folks were grateful that he was doing this work. We saw alpine strawberry plants and two big fluffy dogs - one named Willow and one named Damon. We go a bit slower when we are together—we took a McDonald’s break halfway through - but it was the perfect Sunday afternoon activity.

It makes me think about what he will remember about this entire experience. I know he won’t remember every door we knock or every conversation we have. But I hope he remembers the feeling. Walking beside me, chatting in between houses, handing out literature, learning new things from neighbors, and being part of something bigger than just himself.

I also hope that all of my kiddos will remember their dad throughout this process. It is such a blessing to have a partner who believes in you and supports you. My husband stands with me, staying steady and constant every step of the way. This hasn’t been easy - I left my job as a prosecutor to run, and so my husband has been the sole provider for our family and he’s been carrying a lot of extra responsibility. One day, I know my kids will understand what this all means.

I hope that they realize one day that when our rights, freedoms, and future were on the line, their parents didn’t sit it out. I hope they remember that even as kids, they didn’t sit it out either! We all stepped up and did our part.

We are fighting for everybody - no matter their ability. No matter their race. No matter their faith. We are standing up for every American. We are fighting for our constitution, and we are fighting against the money, power, and people who would pervert it. We are patriots fighting for the country we love.

I have some great news for you too: you can join us. If you’re local, come knock doors with us! If you’re not, consider a trip to Michigan—there is NOTHING like a Michigan summer. Here is the link to sign up to knock doors!

Or, if door-knocking isn’t your thing, then consider a contribution to our race to help us get the word out to voters!

Contribute to our race!

If we are going to win this race and fight for our country to live up to its promise, then we need EVERYONE (including you!) to get off the bench and do just one thing. If we all do our part, we can change the direction of this nation.
