The Davids - Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Father’s Day to all of the dads, stepdads, grandpas, uncles, father figures, single parents, mentors, coaches, and advocates who show up every day for the people they love.

I’ve been blessed with an incredible father and father-in-law, as well as other father figures throughout my life. Today, I want to tell you about two of them in particular, my dad and my husband, and how they helped shape the person I am today.

But first, a quick explanation about the title of this piece. There are a lot of Davids in my life: My dad, brother, husband, father-in-law, and oldest son are all named David.

It’s a wonderful group of men, all of whom I love dearly, and all of whom have played important roles in my life.

My dad, David Bertrand, is one of my very best friends.

Growing up, he always made me feel like I could do anything if I worked hard enough. He supported every dream I ever had, including when I decided I wanted to become a professional wrestler.

Most parents would have gently redirected their child toward more realistic ambitions. My dad explained to me the physical regimen I would need to start engaging in to get in shape for the ring.

Fortunately for everyone involved, especially my future opponents in Congress, that dream was short-lived. What wasn’t short-lived were the lessons he taught me.

My dad showed me a type of leadership that is rarely seen but is truly special. It is strong yet soft, it is oriented around giving to others instead of serving yourself. My dad also taught me about generosity. He has a heart for giving without ever expecting anything in return. Over the years, he has carved his name on so many hearts. He is always sought after by friends, family, and even old colleagues for his wisdom, ability to mediate and solve problems, and just for a listening ear.

So much of me is a product of my dad—from my values to my hobbies, to my ability to change a flat tire, my own oil, fix (minor) plumbing issues, pull wire and install new electrical outlets, and even how important eating a half of an avocado daily is to staying regular.

My dad has been there for every chapter of my life, big and small. He was my first contribution on this campaign. He helps deliver signs, he talks to voters, and he is 100% committed to building a brighter future for his grandkids.

Then there’s my husband, David. My forever Drum Major who keeps my heart on beat, my man after God’s own heart, and the best dad to our three beautiful (and wild) children.

Watching him become a father has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.

He’s the dad who never misses a school event. The dad who is fully engaged in dinner table debates. The dad who somehow manages to make each of our three children feel uniquely seen, valued, and loved.

When people see a campaign, they usually see the candidate. What they don’t see is the family behind it. Running for Congress wasn’t a decision I made alone. It was a family decision. For months, we talked through what it would mean. How we’d make our finances work without my paycheck. What it would mean for our kids.

Then one night, as we approached our deadline to decide, our phones lit up with news that the Department of Education was under threat. Special education is deeply personal to our family, and in that moment, we knew our answer.

We had to fight. For our children, our community, and our country.

The truth is that this campaign wouldn’t exist without David. His steadiness at home, his support through the hardest days, and his willingness to shoulder more than his share of the load make it possible for me to spend more time knocking doors, meeting voters, and winning this election.

But what strikes me most about both of these men, and honestly about all the Davids in my life, is that their concern has never stopped at their own front door.

They care deeply about their families. But they care about other people’s families, too.

They believe every child deserves a fair shot. Every worker deserves dignity. Every family deserves the opportunity to build a good life.

Those values shaped me long before I ever thought about running for Congress.

So today, I’m grateful for my dad, my husband, my brother, my father-in-law, and all the fathers and father figures who lead with love, sacrifice, service, and a healthy willingness to answer when someone yells “David!” across a crowded room.

Happy Father’s Day.
